Dr. Lehman served in the U.S. Navy from 1959 to 1963. He then began his career as an inspector and tester for the Western Electric Telephone Company in Los Angeles, CA from 1963 to 1966. Following this appointment, he briefly served as a credit representative for Standard Oil Company in Los Angeles from 1966 to 1967. He later worked as a television news anchor for KWTV-9 in Oklahoma City, OK, in 1968. Although he enjoyed his vocation as a weekend anchor, Dr. Lehman was encouraged by a professor to pursue teaching.

Soon thereafter, Dr. Lehman left his television anchor position and began his tenure with the University of Central Oklahoma as an English instructor in 1969. He continued to progress with the aforementioned university, serving in the roles of an assistant professor, an associate professor, and a dean of the graduate college between 1985 and 1988. Furthermore, he retired from his lengthy career as a professor in 2006. Other related endeavors to Dr. Lehman's credit include holding the posts of an adjunct professor for the Northampton Area Community College, a folk life researcher for the Smithsonian Institute, a resource facilitator for the University of Oklahoma, and a multicultural advisor for Edmond Public Schools.

Prior to embarking on his professional path, Dr. Lehman earned an Associate of Arts in general education from Los Angeles City College in 1966. Moreover, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in English and speech from the University of Central Oklahoma in 1969. Shortly afterwards, Dr. Lehman concluded his studies a Master of Education from the University of Central Oklahoma in 1971 and a Doctor of Philosophy in English from Lehigh University in 1976.

Civically, Dr. Lehman has volunteered his time to the Oklahoma Foundation for the Humanities, the Edmond Community Housing Resource Board, the Oklahoma Alliance for Arts Education, the Arthritis Foundation, the Edmond Arts and Humanities Council, and the Oklahoma Folk Life Council. A respected voice in the industry, his written works include "The Making of the Negro in Early American Literature," "The Development of a Black Psychic in the Works of John Oliver Killens," "The System of European American Supremacy and African American Inferiority," and "America's Race Problem: A Practical Guide to Understanding Race in America," among others. Additionally, Dr. Lehman has authored articles, essays, and short stories for books and professional journals.

As a testament to his impressive career, Dr. Lehman has been the recipient of numerous prestigious accolades including Service Awards from the Boy Scouts of America and a Leadership Award from the Oklahoma African American Culture Center. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame in 2017 and into the Oklahoma Higher Regent Education Hall of Fame in 2018. Aside from his professional duties, he enjoys participating in art and humanities groups, coaching little league sports, church activities, and book clubs in his spare time. Dr. Lehman maintained affiliation with various professional organizations during his career including the American Association of University Professors, the Higher Education Alumni Council of Oklahoma, the United Teaching Association.
