Everett Mendelsohn, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Everett Mendelsohn is an emeritus professor of the history of science at the prestigious Harvard University.

A celebrated figure in academia, Dr. Mendelsohn is an emeritus professor of the history of science at the prestigious Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Joining the faculty in 1960, he spent his entire career in the department. During his tenure, he pursued the history of the life sciences and aspects of the social and sociological history of science, as well as the relations of science and modern societies. He also twice chaired the department of the history of science and was the director of a research group on biomedical sciences. As an instructor, Dr. Mendelsohn particularly enjoyed teaching one undergraduate course, which focused on science and society in the 20th century. He also relished his time spent as master of the graduate student center, the Dudley House.

A former visiting fellow at Churchill College, a constituent college of the University of Cambridge in England, Dr. Mendelsohn was also a fellow at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute in Israel and a visiting fellow at Zentrum for Interdizsciplinare Forschung and Wissenschafts Kolleg in Germany. He was a professor invitee at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Metiers in Paris as well.

Dr. Mendelsohn has written extensively in his field. He has published over a dozen books, including "Heat and Life: The History of the Theory of Animal Heat" in 1964, "Human Aspects of Biomedical Innovation" in 1971, "Science in Culture" in 2001 and "Life Sciences Before the Twentieth Century: Biographical Portraits" in 2002, and has authored numerous scholarly articles. He has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Medicine and Philosophy, Social Science and Medicine, and Social Epistemology, among several other professional journals, was the founder and editor of the Journal of the History of Biology, and founder of the Sociology of the Sciences.

A former trustee of the Cambridge Friends School, Dr. Mendelsohn also served with several committees and boards throughout his career. He notably chaired the executive committee of the American Friends service committee of New England and was a member of the Commission for Science and Cultural History of Mankind's regional office.

An alumnus of Antioch College, Dr. Mendelsohn first received a Bachelor of Arts in 1953. He later pursued postgraduate coursework at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, in 1957 before acquiring a Doctor of Philosophy at Harvard University in 1960. He later received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Rhode Island College in 1977.

A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Dr. Mendelsohn was very active as founder of the organization's committee on science, arms control and national security. He also served as past president of the International Council for Science Policy Studies, was active on the committee on international security studies with the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and was founder and first president of the Institute for Peace and International Security. He remains a member of the History Science Society, the American Scandinavian Foundation, the International Academy of the History of Medicine and the Academie International d'Historie des Sciences.

Dr. Mendelsohn was awarded with a Bowdoin Prize in 1957, an essay award he received as a student at Harvard University. The university's graduate school also honored him years later by establishing the Everett Mendelsohn Award for Mentorship. In 1991, he received the Gregor Mendel Medal by the Czechoslovak Academy of Science. Three years later, in 1994, he held the Olof Palme Professorship in Sweden. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Mendelsohn has been featured in approximately 30 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the East.
