A Registered Nurse since 1962, Ms. Hawkins celebrates more than 50 years in the field of healthcare. Originally serving in the U. S. Navy Nurse Corps in 1961, Ms. Hawkins practiced as a nurse at the University of Virginia Hospital between 1963 and 1975. She later worked for the Virginia Department of Health as a Public Health Nurse Supervisor and Manager in Charlottesville and Culpeper, VA from 1975 to 1996. After becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner, she continued her practice until retirement in 2010. While in the Naval Reserves, she notably completed service as a Commander and served on active duty during Operation Desert Storm. She retired from the U.S. Naval Reserves in 2001.

Ms. Hawkins initially pursued an education at the University of Virginia, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1962 and a Master of Science in Nursing in 1981. She was certified as a Nursing Administrator, Advanced in 1991. She later earned a Post-master's certificate at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1999 and was certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

In relation to her field, Ms. Hawkins has been an active member of the Virginia Nurses Association, the Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners, the Virginia Public Health Association, the American Nurses Association and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She is also a member of Sigma theta Tau, the Navy Nurse Corps Association and the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution. A celebrated Marquis listee, Ms. Hawkins has been featured in several editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Nursing and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
