Dr. Dawson is a board-certified pathologist who served as chief of surgical pathology, first at Oregon Health Sciences University and later at the University of Chicago. He ultimately retired in 1999 as the chief of pathology and laboratory services at the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital in Tampa. Dr. Dawson also spent many years in academia. He taught at the University of California San Francisco as a visiting assistant professor between 1960 and 1962, before lecturing at the Newcastle University in England, the University of Oregon and the University of Chicago. He spent the remainder of his academic career at the University of South Florida in Tampa as a professor of pathology and laboratory medicine.

Publishing extensively in his field on topics such as Hodgkin's disease, leukemia and breast cancer, Dr. Dawson has authored more than 100 articles in various scholarly journals. In 2016, he published his first book, "Dorothy in a Man's World: A Victorian Woman Physician's Trials and Triumphs." The book documents a biographical tribute to Dorothy Reed Mendenhall, MD, one of medicine's great female pioneers, and showcases the struggles women faced to make a name for themselves in the world of health care.

Born in Britain, Dr. Dawson attended the University of Cambridge in England immediately after World War II. There, he received a Bachelor of Arts; a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery; and a Doctor of Medicine. He went on to intern at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, England, and the Victoria Hospital for Children in London and completed residency work at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School. He also spent three years as a medical officer in the British Army between 1955 and 1958. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Pathology.

An elected fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists, Dr. Dawson has been active with several other industry-related organizations. Some of his roles include serving as the vice president and president of the Chicago Pathology Society and as a member of the International Academy of Pathology, the American Association for Cancer Research and the Arthur Purdy Stout Society of Surgical Pathologists. A celebrated Marquis listee, he has been featured in over a dozen editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
