As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Lavigne's fascination with insects began as a child, when he collected butterflies. As a young man, he enrolled at American International College, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology in 1952. Upon graduation he was hired by the University of Wyoming, Department of Ecosystem Science, as an entomologist where he eventually attained the rank of Professor. He retired from UW as Professor Emeritus in 1994 after 35 years of service in Research and Teaching and went to Australia where he became an Honorary Research Associate at the South Australia Museum, a position he still holds. In 1997, he was a founding member of Blakiston, South Australia, Rotary and received an award from the South Australian Government for initiating a 'Road Watch' program in SA.

Dr. Lavigne is the recipient of numerous grants and is extensively published in professional journals. He is co-author of two books: 'Rangeland Entomology' in 1989 and 'Ants of Yellowstone National Park' in 2004.
