Dr. James Walter Brackner is a professor emeritus of accounting in the School of Accountancy at Utah State University.

Now a professor emeritus of accounting in the School of Accountancy at Utah State University, Dr. Brackner celebrates a near 40-year career in accounting and academia. Affiliated with the university since 1981, where he was appointed as the Thiokol Professor of Accounting and the Alcoa Professor of Accounting, he also taught at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Additionally, Dr. Brackner spent nearly two decades in the field, first as a staff accountant for Arthur Andersen & Co. in Los Angeles, then as the controller of Western Insulated Wire Co. in Los Angeles, next as the chief financial officer of Phaestron Instrument and Electronic Company in South Pasadena and later as the chief financial officer of the Farms Division of the Deseret Management Corp. in Salt Lake City.
Dr. Brackner's impressive professional history includes various consultant roles, including the World Bank financed and directed "Thai Skills Development Project" for the ministry of Labour of the government of Thailand, the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Latvia and the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation. He also served as both a consultant and expert witness for Richards Brandt Miller Nelson, a law firm in Salt Lake City, and was a National Vice-president, a member of Board of Regents, on the National Executive Committee, and the Board of Directors of the Institute of Management Accountants. From 1999 until 2001, he was the "Professor-in-Residence" for the Institute of Management Accountants where he coordinated all student and academic relationships with the Institute. Furthermore, Dr. Brackner was very active with River Heights City, Utah, as the financial director between 2006 and 2010 and as mayor between 2014 and 2018.
Contributing numerous published works in his field, Dr. Brackner was a co-author of the 1996 book "Management Accounting, Manufacturing Excellence." He also regularly contributed articles to professional journals as well as chapters in books. As a CPA, he was a member and former chapter president of the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants, and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Dr. Brackner also belongs to the Institute of Management Accountants where he is recognized as a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) and is Certified in Financial Management (CFM). He was a member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners as a Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) and a member of the National Contract Management Association as well as the American Accounting Association.
An alumnus of Brigham Young University, Dr. Brackner has held a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Accounting since 1961 and 1962, respectively. He later attended The University of Alabama, where he attained a Doctor of Philosophy in accountancy in 1984.
For excellence in his career, Dr. Brackner was the recipient of a Best Paper Award from the Western Decision Sciences Institute, a Shingo Award, and an outstanding Dissertation Award from the University of Alabama's College of Commerce and Business Management. He also received an Award of Merit for his volunteer efforts as a scout leader and merit badge counselor with the Boy Scouts of America in Logan, Utah. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Brackner has been featured in dozens of editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Finance and Industry and Who's Who in the World. He was also recognized as the "Faculty Advisor of the Year" by Utah State University and "The Accounting Educator of the Year" for Utah by the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants.
