Now retired, Dr. Sharples flourished as an educator and administrator with Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, for 35 years. He began his career as an instructor of English in 1961, further progressing to associate chair of the English department in 1965. Soon thereafter, Dr. Sharples became a full chairperson for the English department in 1975, later accepting the role of an Ombudsman during 1981.
As he continued to excel with the institution, Dr. Sharples held the posts of an assistant vice president and an associate provost between 1988 and 1994 before concluding his tenure with the university as an interim dean for the College of Lifelong Learning in 1996. Other professional endeavors to his credit include serving as president of the National Ombudsman's Association from 1984 to 1985. In light of his accomplishments with the university, he was honored as emeritus professor. In addition to this recognition, he was selected for inclusion in the fourth edition of Who's Who in American Education.
Civically, Dr. Sharples enlisted in the United States Army, where he completed service between 1958 and 1965. With an active presence in his community, he has been involved as president of both the Ferndale Board of Education and the Birmingham Unitarian Church. A member of the Modern Language Association, he maintains affiliation with the Michigan Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, the American Management Services User's Group, and the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers. An expert in the field, he has also contributed articles to professional journals.
An alumnus of the University of Massachusetts, Dr. Sharples earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1955. He later earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Rochester in 1964. Enjoying his retirement, Dr. Sharples likes playing the piano, listening to symphonic music, reading, and participating in religious activities during his spare time.
