An acclaimed poet and insurance executive, Mr. Elkins retired in 2011 after working as a documents file administrator for Mutual of America for 15 years. Earlier in his career, he served as the company's proofreader from 1985 to 1996. Additionally, he has worked as a poet laureate for Mutual of America, composing poems for special occasions within the company. Poetry has always been his passion, and through Mutual of America, he was able to foster that love.
In 1969, Mr. Elkins earned a Bachelor of Arts from Lehman College in the Bronx, New York. He retains professional alignment with the American Academy of Poets, the American History Association and the Smithsonian Institution. Throughout his life, he has contributed his poetry to more than 50 anthologies and been honored on many occasions for his work. In addition to earning the Golden Poet Trophy through World of Poetry in 1991, he was awarded through the National Library of Poetry in 1994 and won the Editor's Choice Award through the International Library of Poetry in 2004. Although his career has been filled with highlights, Mr. Elkins married the love of his life, Ethel, in 1978 and were married for nearly 40 years prior to her passing in 2017.
