With more than 50 years of professional experience, Mr. Hardberger has been a trial lawyer with Dykema in San Antonio since 2010. Prior to obtaining his current role, he was mayor of the City of San Antonio from 2005 to 2009, chief justice of the Texas Fourth Court of Appeals in San Antonio from 1994 to 2003, and a trial lawyer with Hardberger & Rodriguez from 1968 to 1994. He previously served as a special assistant to the director of the Office of Economic Opportunity from 1967 to 1968, an executive secretary with the Peace Corps from 1962 to 1966, and an associate editor with the Military Publishing Institute in New York City in 1961. Earlier in his career, he was a press representative with the Texas Baptist Convention from 1958 to 1959 and a reporter with the Waco News Tribune from 1952 to 1954.
Mr. Hardberger began his career as a student at Baylor University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in English and drama in 1955. He continued his studies with the Columbia University School of Journalism, completing a Master of Science in 1960. He then joined Georgetown University, earning a Bachelor of Laws in 1965. He has been board certified in personal injury law.
A respected voice in his areas of interest, Mr. Hardberger has been an active leader in his community. The president of the Phil Hardberger Park Conservancy, he is also a founder and advisory board member of the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. Likewise, he is a founder and board of directors member of the Lumanari Annual Art Festival. To remain abreast of industry developments, he maintains affiliation with the State Bar of Texas, the American Bar Association and the World Affairs Councils of America. He has also written extensively, including "Texas Courtroom Evidence" and the "Texas Workers' Compensation Trial Manual," and he has contributed articles to professional journals.
Throughout his career, Mr. Hardberger has been recognized for his contributions. The recipient of the International Citizen of the Year Award from the World Affairs Councils of America in 2019, he also received the Legion of Merit Medal from the Government of France in 2009.
