TEMPE, AZ, August 12, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Hoyt Cleveland Tillman, Ph.D., with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Tillman celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Tillman is a historian and professor at Arizona State University (ASU) who has been teaching Chinese cultural history on campus since 1976. His courses introduce students to the diversity within Chinese culture by helping them analyze Chinese thinking in modern terms of the humanities and social sciences. He also assists students in acquiring the ability to view Chinese thinking within its own context and perspectives. Dr. Tillman's primary research group at ASU is currently focusing on "China's Daos Today." Led by Stephen Bokenkamp, it explores the revival of Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhism in contemporary China.

Focusing his years of study on exploring Chinese ways of thinking, Dr. Tillman has been analyzing how Chinese, over the centuries, have continued to remake their traditions and identity in response to contemporary problems and in dialogue with ancient wisdom. During his tenure, he has been able to create an historical account of greater intellectual and cultural diversity in the 11th through 13th centuries of Chinese Confucian philosophy, demonstrate the relevance of cultural diversity and the value of less studied thinkers from the Chinese past to our contemporary world, and has served as an individual bridge for enhancing the cultural understanding between China and the West.

Since 2004, Dr. Tillman has been an active researcher at Peking University's Center for Research on Ancient Chinese History in Beijing, China and at Hunan University's Yuelu Academy since 2018. He has taught graduate courses at Peking University, Renmin University of China, National Taiwan University. He is also affiliated with the Institute of History and Philology and the Institute of Chinese Literature and Philosophy at Academia Sinica. He formerly spent time as a visiting research professor at various places, including the National Central Library's Center of Chinese Studies and the Academia Sinica's Institute of Chinese Literature and Philosophy, and was a visiting professor at such universities as the University of Washington, as well as at Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich, Germany. Dr. Tillman has served on various educational committees as well, including the external review committee of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ. He has also served as a grant reviewer for several organizations, including the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), was a member and John K. Fairbank Prize committee member of the American Historical Association, and is a longtime member of the Society for Asian and Comparative Philosophy and the Association for Asian Studies.

Dr. Tillman has published extensively in his area of expertise as a result of his research, including publications in English, Chinese and Korean that highlight diversity within Chinese culture. To date, in addition to publishing nine of his own books and editing or co-editing six others, he has authored more than 150 articles in scholarly journals, as well as chapters to several books. His research has been supported by the Fulbright Foundation, the ACLS and the NEH, among other organizations. In 2000, he was recognized with an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Senior Research Prize (Humboldt-Forschungspreis). It was the first time that the German Foundation bestowed the prize to someone in Chinese Studies.

Honored with multiple awards and recognitions for his work, Dr. Tillman was recently the recipient of a National Library's Center for Chinese Studies fellowship in 2018, a U.S. Department of Education Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad in 2010, and a Comparative and International Education Society Award from the J. William Fulbright Foundation between 2003 and 2004, among multiple other grants and fellowships. He has been cited in several editions of Who's Who in America.

Dr. Tillman earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from Belhaven University in 1966 and a Master of Arts in history from the University of Virginia in 1968, followed by a Master of Arts in regional studies of East Asia and Doctor of Philosophy in history and East Asian languages from Harvard University in 1970 and 1976, respectively.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Hoyt Cleveland Tillman, Ph.D., has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
