A tenured aerospace engineer, Dr. Jaroslaw Sobieski has been employed at the NASA Langley Research Center for the past 48 years.

A tenured aerospace engineer, Dr. Sobieski has been employed at the NASA Langley Research Center for the past 48 years. Hired in 1971, he is now a distinguished research associate for Langley, an organization dedicated to making revolutionary improvements to aviation, expand understanding of Earth's atmosphere and develop technology for space exploration. As a member of their team, Dr. Sobieski has lent his expertise as a senior research scientist, manager of the computational aeroscience team, multidisciplinary research coordinator and chief scientist.

Dr. Sobieski is the former president and consultant engineer of Technical Analysis Optimization, Inc., in Hampton, Virginia, and former consultant of Polish Aircraft Industries in Warsaw, Poland. He has also maintained an academic career that spans close to 50 years. Aligned with the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University as an adjunct faculty member since 2004 and the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands since 2010, for the past 10 years he has also been affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a PhD committee member. Dr. Sobieski most notably spent over three decades as an adjunct faculty member at George Washington University between 1971 and 2003 and taught at the University of Virginia between 1992 and 1999. He also held appointments at Saint Louis University and the Warsaw University of Technology and was a research associate at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

Well-known for his research in and problem-solving for aeronautics, space flight and high-performance computing, Dr. Sobieski has also conducted extensive research in multidisciplinary design optimization. Lecturing widely in his area of expertise, he has presented both in the United States and abroad in such countries as the United Kingdom, Australia, China, Germany and France. He is the co-author of "Multidisciplinary Design Optimization" in 2015, was co-editor for the Structural Optimization Journal from 1989 to 2005, and contributed chapters to several books as well as over 200 articles to peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Sobieski served as a lieutenant in the Polish Air Force in 1955. He soon after received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in aerospace engineering in 1955 and 1957, respectively, followed by a Doctor of Engineering in 1964 at the Warsaw University of Technology. He has been a certified chartered engineer through the Royal Aeronautical Society since 1968.

A fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Dr. Sobieski has been a founding chairman and technical committee member of multidisciplinary design optimization for the organization. He has served as a co-founder and member of the executive board for the International Society for Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization and is active as a member of the Soaring Society of America and The National Institute of Aerospace. Locally, Dr. Sobieski acted as president of the Civic Association in Hampton, Virginia.

Dr. Sobieski was honored by NASA with an Exceptional Service Medal in 2005 and an Exceptional Engineering Achievement Award in 1988. He also received a Wright Brothers Medal from SAE International in 2005 and a National Award for Multidisciplinary Design Optimization from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 1986. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Sobieski has been featured in dozens of editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World.
