Whelton with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Whelton celebrates many years of experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

After accruing many years of experience in nursing and philosophical education, Dr. Whelton became an emeritus professor of philosophy for Wheeling Jesuit University. She served for many years as the vice Chair of the International Philosophy Nursing Society, which is dedicated to bringing together individuals from different countries to promote and support the field of Nursing Philosophy. Additionally, she has served for years as a book review editor of the international journal Nursing Philosophy. Evidence of excellence is found in her having served as the president of King International Nursing Group, for which she now serves as treasurer. Even though her career has been filled with highlights, there is one that stands out. On September 14, 2001, three days after 9/11 she flew to London to give a lecture in Leeds about the value of human life and its dignity which was especially gratifying given the year.

Dr. Whelton studied a number of subjects throughout her career. She began her education with an AD in Nursing from Pacific Union College in California (1964). She then earned a Bachelor of Arts in biology from Northeastern University (1972). Six years later, she earned a Master of Nursing Science at The Catholic University of America. In 1983, she returned to her alma mater, earning an MA and receiving a Doctor of Philosophy in 1996. With a depth of nursing and philosophical knowledge at her disposal, Dr. Whelton has recently published her book written in collaboration with her education colleague, Dr. Jane Neuenschwander, Humanity at the Heart of Practice: A Study of Ethics for Health-Care Students and Practitioners, Cambridge Scholars Publishing. She has contributed many articles in Philosophy of Health Care, including "Being human in a global age of technology" and "Human nature: A foundation for palliative care."

Dr. Whelton would like to acknowledge the significant contributions to her life made by those who believed in her: her uncle, J. Robert Nelson, her high school math and science teacher Dr. Wm. Perry, her sister, Dr. Jeanette Bryson, her major professor, Dr. William A. Wallace, O.P., and the professor who hired her as a nurse-philosopher at Wheeling Jesuit University, Dr. Thomas Michaud.

The 64th and 65th editions of Who's Who in America and the 28th edition of Who's Who of American Women honored Dr. Whelton. In the coming years, she intends to continue teaching and writing.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to her profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Dr. Beverly Whelton is being featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit for more information about this honor.
