UNC Charlotte established a research award in his name: The Stephen Mosier Undergraduate Research Award for Science.

Specialized in the fields of academic administration and the sciences, Dr. Mosier officially retired in 2011 after devoting 25 years of his career to the University of North Carolina (UNC) and three to the University of Houston (UH). In 1983, he joined UH as an associate vice president for international affairs, and later became director of research services at UNC Greensboro. Additionally, Dr. Mosier spent 14 years at UNC Charlotte, serving as associate provost for research and federal relations from 1998 to 2004, as interim chief information officer from 2000 to 2001, and as vice chancellor for research and federal relations from 2004 to 2011.
Prior to his professional pursuits in the field of academia, Dr. Mosier spent five years with the National Science Foundation in Washington as the director of the U.S.-Japan and U.S.-France programs, beginning in 1978, and was actively involved in the management of U.S. science and technology policy for those countries. From 1971 to 1978, he was a research scientist at the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, where he was responsible for conducting research in magnetospheric and solar physics, the findings of which were published in scholarly journals, including Journal of Geophysical Research, Solar Physics, and IEEE Transactions. He also served as the NASA Study Scientist for the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) project, the first cryogenically-cooled telescope flown in space.
In 1964, Dr. Mosier received an undergraduate degree at the College of William and Mary. He later attended the University of Iowa, from which he received a doctoral degree in 1970.
Dr. Mosier was a longstanding member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Geophysical Union, the Society of Research Administrators, and Sigma Xi. He is a former chairman of the board of directors of the North Carolina Association for Biomedical Research in Raleigh, North Carolina, and member of the board of directors of the Center for Applied Technology in Houston, the Ben Craig Center in Charlotte, the North Carolina Biotechnology Center, and the Charlotte Research Institute. Further, he was a research consultant for several universities in the United States and abroad.
Dr. Mosier has been lauded for his professional efforts. He was presented with the NASA Special Achievement Award and received a Research Advocacy Commendation from Research!America for his efforts in promoting biomedical research. Most notably, in 2011, UNC Charlotte established a research award in his name: The Stephen Mosier Undergraduate Research Award for Science. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Mosier has been cited in several editions of Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and Who's Who in the World.
