Supported by a wealth of professional excellence, Mr. Ely has flourished as a tax attorney and an educator for more than 37 years. At the beginning of his career, he worked as an associate and then a partner at Tanner & Guin, LLC, or its predecessor in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, from 1981 to 2001. He has also contributed as an adjunct professor in the Culverhouse School of Accountancy at the University of Alabama since 2014. He has received the Alabama Society of CPA's annual "Outstanding Discussion Leader" award on multiple occasions. Since 2001, Mr. Ely has been a partner with the firm Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP, in Birmingham, Alabama.

In addition to his primary responsibilities, Mr. Ely has participated in the Alabama Senate Business Tax and Regulatory Practices Study Group and served as special counsel for the Alabama Commission on Tax and Fiscal Policy Reform. Active as a vice president of the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama since 1995, he previously served as the chair or vice chair of the Tax & Fiscal Affairs Committee for the Business Council of Alabama from 1986 to 2011. In 1977, Mr. Ely earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting, cum laude, from the University of Alabama. Subsequently, he obtained a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1980 and a Master of Laws in Taxation from New York University School of Law in 1981. Mr. Ely is licensed to practice law in Alabama and has represented taxpayers before the Alabama appellate courts and Alabama Tax Tribunal as well as the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Alabama, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, the U.S. Tax Court and the Supreme Court of the United States.

An expert in tax law, government affairs, and economic development, Mr. Ely has authored a number of related publications. His written works include "Tax-Free Reorganizations," published by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the American Bar Association's "Model State S Corporation Income Tax Act." Additionally, he has penned several articles that have appeared in the Alabama Law Review, the Cumberland Law Review, the Journal of Multistate Taxation, State Tax Notes, and the Bloomberg Daily Tax Report. Currently, Mr. Ely serves as the co-lead editor of the Pass-Through Entity Navigator, an online resource from Bloomberg/BNA that provides comprehensive information on the subject for tax professionals.

For his accomplishments in the field, Mr. Ely has been the recipient of an AV-Preeminent Rating by Martindale-Hubbell since 1997 as well as the Paul Frankel Distinguished Service Award from the New York University Institute on State and Local Taxation. Celebrated early in his career as the Small Business Advisor of the Year by the West Alabama Chamber of Commerce, he was more recently presented with the President's Award from the Alabama State Bar, and the Paul Frankel Excellence in State Taxation Award from the Council on State Taxation. A Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, Mr. Ely maintains his affiliation with the American Bar Association, the Alabama Law Institute, the American College of Tax Counsel, and the New York University Institute on State & Local Taxation.
