A graduate of the University of Virginia, Mr. Robertson earned a Bachelor of Arts, with honors, in 1968. Realizing that he enjoyed a professional challenge, he decided to pursue law, continuing his studies with the University of Virginia and completing a Bachelor of Laws in 1971. He was a member of Phi Kappa Psi, Phi Beta Kappa, The Order of the Coif, and The Jefferson Society. Following these accomplishments, he served as a first lieutenant in the United States Air Force from 1971 to 1972. Mr. Robertson was licensed to practice law by the New York State Bar in 1972.

From 1971 to 1980, Mr. Robertson was an associate at the firm Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft in New York City, focusing on trial law. A partner at the firm from 1980 to 2012, he served as senior counsel from 2012 until his retirement in 2017. Over the course of his career, he has been further admitted to practice by the United States Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit, the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York and the Eastern District of Michigan, and the Supreme Court of the United States. He is proud to have represented the widows of six 9/11 first responders in court and to have secured them financial compensation that would make their lives easier.

Furthermore, Mr. Robertson's expertise has helped to guide the creation of industry standards. He served as a contributing editor for "New York Rules of Professional Conduct" in 2010 and a contributing author for "Elder Law and Guardianship" from 2011 to 2012. In light of his accomplishments, he was recognized as an Echols scholar by the University of Virginia and was the recipient of the Servant of Justice Award in 2014 from the Episcopal Diocese of New York. Mr. Robertson is a member of the American Bar Association, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the New York State Bar Association, the National Conference of Bar Presidents and the New York County Lawyers Association, where he has served on numerous boards and committees. He is a member of the Jamestowne Society, the Society of Colonial Wars, the Sons of the Revolution in the State of New York, The Military Society of the War of 1812, and the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
