Having retired from his 50-year professional journey as an investment counselor, Mr. Mergler was initially a graduate instructor of finance at his alma mater, the University of Cincinnati, in 1963 and 1964. Following that he began to delve directly into the field, beginning as a portfolio manager for Scudder, Stevens & Clark in Cincinnati and then Executive Vice President in Chicago. He subsequently held various other positions, including various upper level management roles, in Florida and Chicago. In more recent years, Mr. Mergler was a partner in Fort Lauderdale and then president of Stein Roe & Farnham, Inc. in Chicago. He later served as the managing partner and the chief investment officer at Loomis, Sayles & Company in Palm Beach Gardens. Most notably, however, was Mr. Mergler's role as a founding partner, the president, and then chairman of Northstar Capital Management, Inc. from 2000 to 2012.
Enjoying the rigors of a demanding, invigorating, and dynamic career, Mr. Mergler was drawn to money management. Coupled with the investment challenges of the business, his vocation offered him the opportunity to provide a needed personal service for such clients as individuals, pension funds and charitable organizations, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Likewise, Mr. Mergler was required to remain aware of unfolding economic and political world events, making the daily experience of his work endlessly fascinating.
Mr. Mergler was active with the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Society of South Florida as the president and a member on the board of directors. He also was a member of the CFA Society of Cincinnati and the CFA Society of Chicago. He lent his expertise on the board of directors of the Bond Club of Fort Lauderdale, and as an arbitrator for the National Association of Security Dealers, Inc. In his local community, Mr. Mergler contributed his time and resources on the Community Foundation of Broward as a board member and chair of the investment committee. Moreover, he became involved with school boards and church committees, chaired the investment and endowment committee and served on the board of the Hibiscus Children's Center, and was the president and the treasurer of his local homeowners' association, among other roles.
Mr. Mergler received a Bachelor of Business Administration with honors in 1963 and a Master of Business Administration in 1964 at the University of Cincinnati. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst [1970], as well as a Chartered Investment Counselor. A member of the Beta Theta Pi since 1959, Mr. Mergler was later inducted into the fraternity's Hall of Fame in 2016 after eight years as a Foundation board member. Mr. Mergler is also a member of Beta Gamma Sigma honor society. Some of his current avocational memberships include the Cullasaja Country Club in Highlands, NC and the Mariner Sands Country Club.
