Troy S. Duster, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Since obtaining emeritus status with UC Berkeley, Dr. Troy S. Duster has lent his knowledge to such institutions as the American Cultures Center as director.

After his professional interests shifted from journalism to sociology, Dr. Duster earned a Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Philosophy from Northwestern University in 1957 and 1962, as well as a Master of Arts from the University of California Los Angeles in 1959. Upon graduating with his doctorate degree, he began as an assistant professor of sociology for the University of California Riverside, where he served from 1963 to 1965. Subsequently, he transferred to the University of California Berkeley as an assistant research sociologist. He remained with UC Berkeley between 1970 and 2001 as associate professor, professor and chancellor's professor before retiring, at which time he obtained emeritus status. During his time with UC Berkeley, he also served as department chairman.

Since obtaining emeritus status with UC Berkeley, Dr. Duster has lent his knowledge to such institutions as the American Cultures Center as director, the Association of American Colleges and Universities, where he served as chairman of the Board of Directors from 2003 until 2004, and as a Silver professor of sociology and director for the Institute for the History of the Production of Knowledge at New York University. Throughout his career, he has also channeled his extensive experiences into the creative works "Legislation of Morality," the monograph "Aims and Control of the Universities," and the first and second editions of "Backdoor to Eugenics." In 1984, he co-edited "Cultural Perspectives on Biological Knowledge." Over the years, he has achieved a number of professional highlights, including earning an honorary Doctor of Science from Northwestern University.

Dr. Duster retains affiliation with the American Sociological Association, where he has worked as a member of the Executive Office of the Budget Council and president. Additionally, he served as chair of the Ethical, Legal and Social Issues Commission of the National Center for Human Genome Research, as a member of the National Panel of the American Commitments Initiative of the Association of American Colleges and Universities. Previously, he dedicated himself to the National Academy of Sciences, the President's Commission on Mental Health, Mills College Board of Trustees, and the National Commission of Forensic Science. For his efforts in sociology and education, Dr. Duster was honored with a Swedish government fellowship at Uppsala University in 1962, a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship with the London School of Economics in 1971, a Ford Foundation fellowship in 1978 and features in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who in American Education.
