After earning a Bachelor of Science from Clarkson University and a Master of Science in mathematics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1968 and 1969 respectively, Professor Helinger began a career in mathematics education with Clinton Community College as an instructor. Four years later, he became an assistant professor and remained in the role from 1974 until 1986, becoming a full professor in 2002. Prof. Helinger became the first chairperson of the Mathematics Department when the college was reorganized from divisions to departments and served from 2008 to 2011. Dedicated to student and academic excellence, he served on various committees, including the academic affairs committee, the student retention committee, and the professional development committee. Over the years, he also worked as an associate professor as well as a professor before retiring from the institution in 2017. Due to his mathematical proficiency, Professor Helinger taught calculus for business once or twice a year from the Spring semester, 1976 until the end of his career and also authored a textbook titled "Calculus for Business Students."
During the course of his educational career, Professor Helinger also gained valuable expertise in other fields, working as a life insurance agent for William LaCount Associates of Franklin United Life between 1980 and 1984, the owner and manager of Sue's Beauty Salon, the owner of B&M Firewood Co., and the president and the treasurer of Helinger Rentals, Inc., which he has successfully managed since 1976. Even though his career has been filled with highlights, Professor Helinger is especially proud to have been chosen as one of 20 mathematics educators from across the country to take part in a symposium on developmental education through McGraw Hill publishing company.
In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Professor Helinger retained his professional alignment with the Mathematical Association of America, the New York State Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges, and the Math League, which he coached between 1984 and 2002. Devoted to his community, he also gave back through Jehovah's Witnesses and Clinton Correctional Facility through which he was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation in 1989, 1992, and 1999. In the coming years, Professor Helinger intends to continue running Helinger Rentals and enjoying his retirement.
