An award-winning newsman, his articles have been published in several countries in the Americas for many years. He also served as a writer and Editorial Board member of Americas Quarterly, a publication based in New York City and distributed throughout the continent.
As a business executive, he served as the Senior Vice President and Executive Committee member for ITT Corporation, and a board member in many international organizations such as Italy's CIGA and Sheraton Hotels. He is also a former advisory board member of the U.S. Information Agency and the School of Speech at Northwestern University, and a current member of an international advisory at Universidad Católica in Santiago, Chile.
After retiring from ITT, Cappello formed his own consultancy company and, with London-based WPP, created the partnership that made Hill & Knowlton/Latin America one of the fastest and most successful public affairs agencies in the region with operations in seven countries. For almost a decade, he served as its Partner, Chairman and CEO until a few years ago.
Cappello is a frequent lecturer on international political and media-related matters and served as the International Committee Chair and member of the Executive Committee of the International Tennis Hall of Fame. He is also a member and/or director of several international organizations such as the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City, the Center for International Relations in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the Latin American Seminar and other study groups on hemispheric relations at Columbia University and at the Universidad de Chile Law School, the North American-Chilean Chamber of Commerce, and Fundaci6n Chile. He is also the author of four books.
His professional work has been recognized in Latin America, Europe and the United States. He received the coveted Entrepreneur of the Year Award from NACCC and has been decorated by the governments of Austria, Chile and France. Recently, he was recognized by professional communications groups and associations and by Baruch College as the first Latin-born senior vice president and chief communications officer in the history of U.S.-based Fortune 500 companies.
Cappello, an American citizen and a New York resident, was born in Santiago, Chile and married (1966) the former Jean B. Forrester, Ph.D., a professor at Rutgers University and Fordham University. They have one daughter, two sons, and six grandchildren. He holds graduate and post-graduate degrees from Northwestern University in Illinois and from Universidad de Chile in Santiago.
He has been cited in the 28th edition of Who's Who in Finance and Industry and the 44th, 45th, 46th and 50th edition of Who's Who in America.
