Dr. Virginia Olga Beattie Emery retired as a clinical associate professor from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College in 2017.

Having accrued over 30 years of professional experience, Dr. Emery retired as a clinical associate professor from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College in 2017. While she taught at the college, she also held the position of a director of the Center on Aging and Health since 1989. Notably, she was also a lecturer at the Third World Congress on Controversies in Neurology in 2009. From 1986 to 1989, she held the multiple positions of a senior faculty associate for the Center on Aging and Health, an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University, and an assistant professor of psychology at the aforementioned university. Dr. Emery career began at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College as an adjunct clinical assistant professor in 1983.

Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Emery pursued her initial studies at the University of Chicago, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in 1962. After completing further coursework at Indiana University Bloomington, she earned a Master of Arts in 1973. Dr. Emery concluded her coursework in 1982, after which she graduated from the University of Chicago with a Doctor of Philosophy.

A contributor of chapters and articles to books and publications in her field, Dr. Emery is the author of several professional publications. She has written, "Language Impairment in Dementia of the Alzheimer Type: A Hierarchical Decline," "Retrophylogenesis of Memory in Dementia of the Alzheimer Type: A New Evolutionary Memory Framework," "Alzheimer Disease: Are We Intervening Too Late?" and "Interface between Vascular Dementia and Alzheimer Syndrome: Nosologic Redefinition." She was the editor of two editions of "Dementia: Presentations, Differential Diagnosis, and Nosology."

Notably, Dr. Emery is the recipient of the IPA Original Research Award, a clinical research grant from the National Institute of Mental Health, and an award for outstanding research in dementia from New Hampshire Hospital. She has been honored as a Frontiers of Knowledge Atlee Zellers lecturer and a Paul Janssen Medical Institute lecturer, among other honors. Outside of Dr. Emery's immediate professional responsibilities, she has dedicated her time and services to the Gerontological Society of America, the America Psychological Association, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, to name a few.
