Joan M. Marter is the editor-in-chief of the Woman's Art Journal and the guest curator for numerous exhibitions for museums and institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

She is also the editor-in-chief of the Woman's Art Journal and the guest curator for numerous exhibitions for museums and institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Prior to her current position, she served the aforementioned university in a number of capacities from 1977 to 2016. In that time, Dr. Marter has found success as an associate professor, a full professor, a director of graduate studies, a distinguished professor, and a director of the curatorial studies program. Dr. Marter began her career as an instructor at Pennsylvania State University in 1970.

Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Marter pursued an education at Temple University, earning a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in 1968. She completed additional coursework at the University of Delaware, acquiring a Master of Arts in 1970. Dr. Marter concluded her education at the aforementioned university in 1974, when she graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy.

The president of the Dorothy Dehner Foundation, Dr. Marter has published a number of articles in addition to the books, "Alexander Calder" and "Off Limits: Rutgers University and the Avant-Garde." She is the co-author of "American Sculpture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art" and a guest essayist for the "Women of Abstract Expressionism" essay collection, which she also edited. Notably, Dr. Marter has received the Chester Dale Fellowship Award from the National Gallery of Art, the Charles F. Montgomery Prize from the Decorative Arts Society, the John Sloan Foundation Grant, and a Distinguished Feminist Award, among several other accolades.
