Dr. Baird began his career in English language instruction in 1961, when he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Midland College in Fremont, Nebraska, following in the footsteps of his parents. He completed a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Texas in 1968 and 1969, respectively.

From 1961 to 1964, Dr. Baird was a high school teacher at Kyushu Gakuin, a private high school in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. He became a professor at the International Christian University of Tokyo from 1969 to 1974. Dr. Baird considers his time in Japan to have been the highlight of his career, and is most proud of having become bilingual and having learned to navigate life despite culture shock. He returned to the United States in 1974 as a professor for Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, where he would serve until 2009. In 2009, Dr. Baird was granted professor emeritus status by Trinity University.

Dr. Baird was a lecturer for the Fulbright Association in Japan in 1970 and 1972 and served on the board of directors of Tokyo Women's Christian University from 1970 to 1974. He was commissioner of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Education in Washington, DC, from 1991 to 1994 and has been the recipient of numerous grants, including a 1982 research grant from the American Folklife Center and a 1984-1985 writing program grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. He is a member of the American Dialect Society, where he served as regional secretary from 1981 to 1989 and was the chair of non-English dialects from 1969 to 2009. As a testament to his success, he was highlighted in the 25th edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest in 1997.
