Delving into his profession due to his passions for nature and biology, Dr. Bedford pursued formal education at Michigan State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy in 1965, 1967, and 1970, respectively. Influenced by his mentor Dr. Carlos Fetterolf, an environmentalist and member of the Ph.D. committee at Michigan State University, Dr. Bedford commenced his career as the chief pesticide chemist at the Water Resources Laboratory in Lansing, Michigan, in 1970, holding the role for 14 years. During this time, he also served as the unit chief of Michigan Environmental Laboratories for a decade between 1974 and 1984.
From 1984 to 1989, Dr. Bedford served as a senior toxicologist with the Toxic Substance Control Commission in Lansing and subsequently acted as an environmental health ombudsman for the Michigan Department of Public Health from 1990 to 1998. Since 1980, he has held the role of instructor at Lansing Community College. Alongside his primary career endeavors, Dr. Bedford has been the editor of Michigan Fisherman Magazine since 1983 and has authored four books and over 100 magazine features on fishing.
Dr. Bedford has maintained affiliation with numerous organizations in an effort to remain abreast of developments within the industry. He is a member of the Air & Waste Management Association, American Fisheries Society, the Michigan Outdoor Writers Association and Sigma Xi. Serving on the board of directors of the Michigan Steelhead and Salmon Fishermen's Association since 1978, he is also a lifetime member and chapter president of Trout Unlimited.
In light of his myriad accomplishments, Dr. Bedford has accrued several accolades and honors. The Michigan Outdoor Writers Association thrice presented him with the Best Feature Award in 1979, 1983, and 1986. He also received the Best Book Award in 1999 and multiple Best Photo Awards from the Michigan Outdoor Writers Association.
Married with two children, Dr. Bedford is a native of Colfax, Washington, and currently resides in Lansing, Michigan. In his spare time, he enjoys trout and steelhead fishing. He often speaks at fishing shows and conferences across the nation. He also loves gardening and coin collecting. Impressively, he was featured in the 22nd edition of Who's Who in the Midwest in light of his exceptional undertakings.
