John T. Tatum Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Engineering

Mr. Tatum has 45 years of experience in Radar, Electronic Warfare and Directed Energy Weapons as an employee of the US Army and a consultant with the SURVICE Engineering Company and the Defense Systems Information Analysis Center

GAITHERSBURG, MD, September 09, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- John T. Tatum has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all considered during the selection process.

Motivated by an abiding passion for science and electronics, Mr. Tatum has excelled as an electronic systems engineer for the SURVICE Engineering Company and the Defense Systems Information Analysis Center (DSIAC) since 2011 when he retired from Government service. Considered an expert by his fellow engineers due to his 45 years of experience in Radar, Electronic Warfare (EW) and Directed Energy Weapons (DEWs), he is highly sought after for his knowledge of High-Power Radio Frequency/Microwave (HPRF/M) weapons and their effects on electronic devices. Prior to obtaining his current role, Mr. Tatum found success as an electronic systems engineer for the U.S. Army Research Laboratory in Adelphi, Maryland [Formerly the US Army Harry Diamond Laboratories (HDL) from 1974 until 2011. For his work on the effects of high-power RF pulses on electronics, Mr. Tatum was honored with HDL's Wilbur S. Hinman Award for Technical Team Achievement in 1988.

In addition to his present role with SURVICE/DSIAC, Mr. Tatum also teaches science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to school students in his free time. Since he enjoys sharing information, he also teaches short courses on "HPRF/M weapons and their effects on electronics at Directed Energy (DE) conferences. Though his career has been suffused with several highlights, he is especially proud to have been a member of the team that developed and transitioned a counter improvised explosive device (C-IED) system, known as Blowtorch/Warlock Dragon to soldiers and marines stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan to improve their survivability. For this action, Mr. Tatum was honored to be a member of the Army Research Laboratory team that won the award for the Army Top Ten Inventions of 2015.

Prior to joining the aforementioned laboratory in 1974, Mr. Tatum earned an associate degree from Prince Georges College in engineering. He subsequently obtained a bachelor's degree in electrical and electronics engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1975. Later he took graduate courses at the University of Maryland and John Hopkin University. Throughout his career, he has honed his knowledge of the field through affiliations with the Association of Old Crows Electronic Warfare Society, the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Eta Kappa Nu honor society and was selected a Fellow of the Directed Energy Professional Society (DEPS) in 2004

Mr. Tatum has written several papers in his career in the areas of; Electromagnetic/RF Effects (EM/RF)) on electronic system, methodologies for conducting EM effect experiments on electronic systems, DEW feasibility studies and mathematical /computer models to compute the probability of failure of an electronic system to incident EM energy. Since he retired from Government service in March 2011. He has generated four articles for the Defense Systems Information Analysis Center Journal, on High-Power Microwave Directed Energy Weapons: A Model and Simulation Toolbox", High Power RF/Microwave DEWs and their effects, "DEW Countermeasures: A Notional Example of Hardening A System Against HPM, and most recently Radio Frequency Directed Energy Weapon Design Tool."
