Dr. Joseph D. Novak has been a professor emeritus of plant biology and science education at Cornell University in New York since 1995.

Dr. Novak has been a professor emeritus of plant biology and science education at Cornell University in New York since 1995. A teacher for more than 40 years, he began his career at his alma mater, the University of Minnesota, as a teaching assistant, then instructor. He soon after acquired teaching positions at Kansas State Teachers College and Purdue University before becoming a faculty member at Cornell in 1967. While in academia, Dr. Novak also served as a visiting fellow at Harvard University, distinguished visiting professor at the University of North Carolina and visiting professor at the University of West Florida and the University of South Florida.

Since 1996, he has been lending his expertise as a senior research scientist at the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition, a non-profit research institute of the Florida University System. A sought-after professional in his field, Dr. Novak is also president of Joseph D. Novak Knowledge Consultants, Inc. Throughout his career, he has been involved with knowledge construction and organization consulting work for Proctor & Gamble and several other organizations and was a consultant to over 400 schools and colleges.

Writing extensively in his field, Dr. Novak has authored numerous books, including "Learning How to Learn" in 1984, which has been translated into 10 languages, and "Learning, Creating and Using Knowledge: Concept Maps as Facilitative Tools for Schools and Corporations" in 1998. He has also contributed over 40 chapters to books and more than 130 articles to professional journals.

An alumnus of the University of Minnesota, Dr. Novak received a Bachelor of Science in 1952, Master of Arts in 1954 and Doctor of Philosophy in 1958. He received honorary PhDs from the University of Comanhue in Argentina, the Public University of Navarra in Spain and the University of Urbino in Italy.

Dr. Novak is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Among other organizations, he is a member of the National Science Teachers Association, the National Association of Biology Teachers, where he received an Honorable Member Award, and the National Association for Research in Science Teaching, where he once served as president and received an Outstanding Contributions in Science Teaching through Research Award.

In 2003, Dr. Novak was awarded a Charles E. Bessey Award from the Botanical Society of America. He was also awarded a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Minnesota, several fellowships and was a Fulbright-Hayes senior scholar in Australia. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Novak has been featured in more than 45 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World.
