At the beginning of his career in Missouri, he worked for the Springfield Newspapers, Inc. as a feature writer and the Monett Times as a newspaper editor. Over the years, Dr. Rowland found success in varying positions with Southern Illinois University, the U.S. Army, and St. Cloud State University's Center for British Studies.

Dr. Rowland has earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Missouri in 1950, a Master of Science degree in journalism from Southern Illinois University in 1959 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Michigan State University in 1969. He has been affiliated with the Society of Professional Journalists, for which he served as deputy director and president of the Minnesota chapter. He has authored "American Students in Alnwick Castle," "Loyal to thy Fine Tradition: St. Cloud State University-125 Years," "Big War, Small Town," "Early Childhood Education," and "So Much to Learn."

Dr. Rowland accepted a number of honors over the years, including a National Defense Education Act doctoral fellowship through Michigan State University, an Appreciation Award from the Mayor of St. Cloud, and a Distinguished Service Award from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. He was additionally featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the Midwest and Who's Who in American Education.
