Mr. Bennett is a retired lawyer with more than 45 years of distinguished accomplishment in his field. He began his professional journey in 1971, graduating with high distinction from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1974, Mr. Bennett subsequently earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Cornell University, after which he was promptly admitted to practice law by the New York State Bar.

From 1974 to 1979, Mr. Bennett was an associate at the firm Donovan, Leisure, Newton, and Irvine, of New York City. He joined McGraw-Hill Inc. in 1979 as an associate general counsel, whereupon he eventually rose to the position of senior vice president, associate general counsel and corporate secretary. Mr. Bennett maintained his association with McGraw-Hill and Standard & Poor's Financial Corp. until his retirement in 2016.

Mr. Bennett had been sworn to practice law before the Supreme Court of the United States in 1976, the United States District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York in 1975, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in 1975. He was a member of the American Bar Association and the New York State Bar Association. Mr. Bennett is active in a number of organizations supporting the LGBT community, and serves as a director of SAGE USA in New York, and the Our Fund Foundation of Fort Lauderdale. He is a longtime volunteer with Equality Florida and the Outshine Film Festival.
