Having accrued over 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Ericson has found success as a partner at a consultant firm since early 2018. Previously, he excelled as a professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa from 1992 to 2019, for which he also held the title of the emeritus chair of the department of educational foundations. Dr. Ericson began his career as an assistant professor at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University between 1977 and 1979. He worked as an assistant professor at the University of California Los Angeles from 1979 until 1986, after which he became an associate professor for the aforementioned university in 1986. Additionally, Dr. Ericson has held the positions of a consultant for the Nichinoken Institute in Japan, a partner for Mid-Pacific International Higher Education Consultancy, and a researcher for the Pacific Rim Center at the University of California Los Angeles.

Prior to embarking on his professional path, Dr. Ericson pursued an education at St. Olaf College, where he had the opportunity to study at Cambridge before graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in 1970. He completed additional coursework at Syracuse University, earning a Master of Arts in philosophy in 1973. After pursuing further postgraduate study at the University of London, Dr. Ericson concluded his education at Syracuse University, acquiring a Doctor of Philosophy in 1976.

Notably, Dr. Ericson was a grantee of the Spencer Foundation from 1981 to 1986 and received a Fulbright Award from 2008 until 2013. The former editor-in-chief of Studies in Philosophy and Education between 1989 and 1994, he is the co-author of "Predicting the Behavior of the Education System." Outside of his immediate professional responsibilities, Dr. Ericson is an active member of the American Education Research Association, the Comparative and International Education Society, and a fellow of the Philosophy of Education Society.
