Martha Lockhart Nodine Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Ms. Nodine has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the field of education

SAN ANTONIO, TX, September 19, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Martha Lockhart Nodine with Albert Nelson Marquis' Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished educator, Nodine celebrates many years' experience and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, as well as credentials and successes she has accrued. Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes include only individuals who are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all considered during the selection process.

With over 30 years of professional teaching experience, Martha earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Colorado College in 1961, with minors in art as well as in history and government. While a military wife, she taught in Colorado, Alabama, New York, and Virginia public schools. Briefly in Tucson, she earned a Master of Arts in English Literature at the University of Arizona in1967. Relocating alone to the Southwest, she taught art and English in the San Antonio Independent School District from 1968 until 1972; then contracted with the North East ISD where she taught English, creative writing and, later, art from 1972-1996. Remarried as Martha Stephens, she served as an English Level Chairman, then chaired the English Literature Book Selection Committee for the District, later serving as president of the San Antonio Teachers of English, drawing members from 13 independent area school districts.

Notably, Martha exhibited drawings and sculpture in a two-person show at Chapman Graduate Center, Trinity University, in 1979, followed by a regional group exhibition of the Texas Society of Sculptors at the United Bank of Austin, and at the 1980 National Organization for Women convention in San Antonio.

During the early 1980's, aside from teaching, Martha wrote feature articles about art and architecture for the San Antonio Express-News. Then, at the new San Antonio Museum of Art, she collaborated with the Education Department to design student tours based on the permanent collection and to teach Saturday design to families. In 1983, when famous sculptor David Smith's exhibition traveled from the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden to SAMA, she gave gallery tours to adults. (A decade later, Martha would meet Smith's first wife Dorothy Dehner in New York in her Greenwich Village apartment.) After taking art and art history courses at UT San Antonio at night and in the summers for ten years, Martha earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and held a one-woman show at the San Antonio Art Center in 1989.

As an art and creative writing teacher, Martha sponsored the Art National Honor Society and co-sponsored Bullseye, MacArthur H.S.'s art and writing magazine, which won a Gold Crown from Columbia School of Journalism in 1995, one of only four in the country that year. In 1996, Martha retired to research and write Resilience: The Life and Work of Artist Dorothy Dehner. She married Wright Anderson Nodine in 2001 and completed Dehner's biography in 2019.
