Grace Lu-Yao Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Medical Oncology

Dr. Lu-Yao assisted in the establishment of an internationally recognized program dedicated to translational cancer outcomes research.

Having accrued over 30 years of inimitable experience in the field of medical oncology, Dr. Lu-Yao has garnered a lauded reputation as a professor, an associate director, and the vice chair of population science in medical oncology for the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University since 2016. She previously held the role of a visiting professor at Harvard University from 2015 to 2016. Concurrently, Dr. Lu-Yao found success at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (now Rutgers University) as an associate professor for the School of Public Health from 2007 to 2010, an associate professor at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey (CINJ) from 2004 to 2008, and the director of HealthStat from 1997 to 2003. She had also served as a staff researcher in the Office of Research in Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services from 1995 to 1996. She started her career as an assistant professor in the Center of Evaluative Clinical Science at the Dartmouth College, working with the pioneer of outcomes research, Dr. John E. Wennberg between 1990 and 1994.

Having dedicated her career to improve cancer care, Dr. Lu-Yao has excelled as the research director of the Neu Center of Supportive Medicine and Cancer Survivorship at Thomas Jefferson University since 2017. Throughout her tenure at the aforementioned institution, she helped to establish the Transdisciplinary Integrated Population Science mechanism at the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center (SKCC) at Jefferson through which she hopes to accelerate high-quality evidence-based cancer prevention and care for all.

Much sought-after for her expert medical opinion, Dr. Lu-Yao has published numerous articles in professional journals, most prominently "15-Year Survival Outcomes Following Primary Androgen Deprivation Therapy for Localized Prostate Cancer" in 2014, and "Outcomes of Localized Prostate Cancer Following Conservative Management" in 2009, in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA). She has additionally contributed her research to such articles as "Outcomes of Treatments for Clinically Localized Prostate Cancer" in Lancet in 1997 and "Mortality and Hospitalization Risk Following Oral Androgen Signaling Inhibitors Among Men with Advanced Prostate Cancer by Pre-existing Cardiovascular Comorbidities" in the European Urology in 2019. In her earlier writings, she authored "Geographic Variation in Rates of Prostate Cancer and Radical Prostatectomy in the United States" in Lancet, and "An Assessment of Radical Prostatectomy for Prostate Cancer: Geographic Variations, Time Trends, and the Evaluation of Medical Care Outcomes" in JAMA. Dr. Dr. Lu-Yao's research findings have been featured in well-regarded media outlets as the New York Times, USA Today, CNN, and many others. Currently, she is a board member of the International Network for Cancer Treatment and Research.

Before embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Lu-Yao attended the State University of New York at Stony Brook, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry, with honors, in 1986. She further studied at Yale University, earning a Master of Public Health in 1988 and a Doctor of Philosophy in epidemiology in 1990. Dr. Lu-Yao has remained aware of further developments in the field through her professional affiliations with the American Association of Cancer Research, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Preventive Oncology, the Association of American Cancer Institutes, the International Society of Geriatric Oncology, and the American College of Epidemiology, of which she recognized as a fellow.

In light of her impeccable expertise in the field, Dr. Lu-Yao has been honored with numerous accolades throughout the course of her career. She additionally received an Allied and Nursing Investigator Award from the International Society of Geriatric Oncology in 2018, an Excellence in Research Award from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 2009, the Dean's Research Award for Best Publication by Clinical Faculty from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in 2008, the Robert DiPaola Research Award from the Cancer Institute of New Jersey in 2006, a Henry Christian Award in 1994, and a National Research Service Award in 1989 and 1990.
