With over 50 years of professional experience to his credit, Mr. McLane has worked of counsel for Scheef & Stone LLP in Dallas since 2009. Practicing in corporate/securities and employee benefits, he excelled as an associate, then partner, with Gardere Wynne Sewell LLP (now Foley & Lardner) and its predecessor firm in Dallas from 1967 to 2004. Earlier in his career, Mr. McLane served as a Texas Supreme Court briefing attorney from 1966 to 1967. He was selected as one of Texas' Top Rated Lawyers in Securities Law by Legal Leaders Magazine in 2015 and as one of Texas' Top Rated Lawyers in Business Law by Legal Leaders Magazine in 2014. Mr. McLane holds an AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell.
By the age of eight, Mr. McLane knew he wanted to follow his father's footsteps into the legal field. After graduating from Highland Park High School in 1960, he attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1963. He concluded his studies at SMU Dedman School of Law in 1966 (where he was a member of the Alumni Association's Executive Board) graduating with a Bachelor of Laws. Following these accomplishments, Mr. McLane was licensed to practice law by the State Bar of Texas in 1966 and represented cases in front of the Supreme Court of the United States in 1971. One of his philosophies is that attorneys have a platform that can be used to influence others and our laws in a positive way, and he incorporates this philosophy into his practice and core beliefs.
At age 24, when he had only been practicing law for six months, he worked on a public offering with New York underwriters. Counsel for the underwriters was the Wall Street firm of Nixon Mudge and his firm Wynne Jaffe & Tinsley represented the issuer company. In December of 1967, Mr. McLane and his associates worked long hours preparing the prospectus and other offering materials. He worked mainly in their New York office, and he often walked by the offices of Richard Nixon and John Mitchell, but never met them. The partners of Wynne Jaffe were so busy on bigger deals, that their drafts were reviewed in Dallas while the Nixon Mudge partner and Mr. McLane generated them in New York. He recalls, thinking "Talk about being thrown into the fire at an early age!" He obtained the American Stock Exchange listing for this company and the NYSE listing for its parent Wyly Corp.
Mr. McLane is a former president and director of the Southwest Benefits Association, and a member of the Dallas Bar Association and previously the American Bar Association and its Federal Regulation of Securities Committee. He has lectured in his areas of expertise, authored a chapter titled "Options and Employee Stock Ownership Plans" for the book "Texas Corporations: Law and Practice" in 1984, and edited the article "Incorporation Planning in Texas" in 1977.
He believes his professional success can be attributed to finding creative solutions that can be beneficial to all parties' objectives, getting all parties on the same page, and trying to find points of commonality rather than points that are at odds with each other. He learned, over time, that lawyers should sometimes look at results from the perspective of a business person rather than only what you are and are not permitted to do under the law. He also believes one should not be overly focused on what may appear to be the issue when the real issue is something else. He recalls wishing he had pursued an MBA so that he was more educated about the business side of things.
He is thankful to his mentors for teaching him how important it is to be precise about the things you write; that you cannot use a cookie cutter approach, and how important it is to prioritize the things that really matter in the transaction rather than the things that are only secondarily important.
He grew up in First Baptist Church in Dallas and has been a member of Highland Park Presbyterian Church for 28 years, Park Cities Presbyterian Church for 28 years, and Park Cities Baptist Church since 2015. He enjoys supporting and participating in organizations for attorneys and Christian ministries as well as training and mentoring young lawyers and encouraging lawyers in their Christian faith. He collects antique Bibles, Puritan writings and other books, and enjoys attending Dallas Mavericks games and traveling. He fondly remembers activities with his children and family: ski trips, mission trips, YMCA Indian Guides and Indian Princess group activities, teaching his children's Sunday school classes, and coaching their sports teams. He also fondly recalls playing handball with his dad as a high school student, before his father died. Mr. McLane also took mission trips to India, Cuba, Russia, Peru and Mexico, often with his children.
He feels blessed to have trained many lawyers and enjoyed close friendships with many clients, to have been involved in many creative and challenging transactions and industries, and to have worked in and with fine law firms and ministries. He hopes to be remembered for his integrity and for always doing things the right way.
A native of Dallas, Mr. McLane has five daughters, two sons, and 16 grandchildren. He is grateful to have seen his adult children mature into their individual "molds." As a child, all his family members lived in Dallas, Texas; now, his family is spread coast to coast. His mother lived to be 96 and was a constant inspiration to him and his family. He has tried to teach his children to trust and walk with God and that no matter what you do, it should be something that you are passionate about and something at which you will be effective.
Incredibly involved in his community as well, Mr. McLane previously participated on the boards of directors for both the Alumni Association and the Law Alumni Association of Southern Methodist University in Dallas from 1972 to 1977 and 1981 to 1985, respectively, and has been on the Executive Board for the Law School since 1997. Additionally, he has provided his skills and resources to the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas, the Dallas Symphony Association and the Dallas County AIDS Planning Commission Task Force, among others. Currently, Mr. McLane holds a position on the president's council of the Dallas Theological Seminary and on the board of directors of the Christian Legal Society of Dallas.
For excellence in his career, Mr. McLane has been the recipient of a number of honors and accolades over the years. Notably, he was presented with the Volunteer of the Year Award by the Law Alumni Association of Southern Methodist University in 1984. In light of all his accomplishments, Mr. McLane has been featured in Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
