Now retired, Dr. Waring is renowned as an esteemed research scientist with more than 45 years of contributions to his discipline. He initially pursued an education at the University of California Berkeley, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy in 1963. Dr. Waring accepted a position at Oregon State University, as a professor the same year, and would excel in this post until 2000.

Dr. Waring has further found success as a guest professor at numerous institutions, including the University of Innsbruck in Austria from 1969 to 1970, the University of Edinburgh in Scotland from 1976 to 1977, and the Swedish University of Agriculture in Uppsala from 1982 to 1983. He worked as a visiting professor at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, from 1986 to 1987 and at the University of Waikato in New Zealand from 1991 to 1992. In addition to these academic residencies, Dr. Waring was active as a visiting scientist for NASA from 1992 to 1993, CSIRO in Canberra, Australia, from 1996 to 1997, and the University of Western Australia from 2008 to 2009.

During his time at NASA, Dr. Waring served as the acting program manager of land-atmosphere interactions. He was notably recognized as a Distinguished Professor at Oregon State University from 1995 to 2000. His research includes extensive work in process-based forest growth models, and collaborative work with entomologists on bark beetle ecology. Moreover, Dr. Waring is a member of the International Union Forestry Research Organization.
