An accomplished listee, Mr. Fairbanks celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. Supported by a career of almost 50 years, Mr. Fairbanks currently holds the titles of senior research associate and emeritus director for the Fuller Craft Museum, having previously been the director from 2014 to 2018. After founding the American Decorative Arts and Sculpture department at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in 1971, Mr. Fairbanks served as curator of the department until 1999. He began his career in 1961 at the Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library, where he progressed from curatorial assistant to associate curator in charge of conservation. Additionally, he has found success in teaching at the University of Delaware, the BYU Extension Service, and the Extension Service of West Virginia University.

Prior to his career endeavors, Mr. Fairbanks pursued an education at the University of Utah, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1953. For the following two years, he completed service with the United States Navy navigating for Commander Cruiser Division 4, Atlantic Fleet. He then completed further coursework at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1956 to 1957 in a coordinated program for a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He concluded his formal education at the University of Delaware, where he earned a Master of Arts degree in 1961.

Recognized as a Winterthur Fellow from 1959 to 1961, Mr. Fairbanks' numerous artistic works include "New England Begins," "The Seventeenth Century," one-man shows at the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, Hagerstown, MD, exhibited paintings at Haley & Steele, and commissioned murals at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. The co-author of "American Furniture: 1620 to the Present," he is a painter of landscapes, portraits and still life.

Outside of his immediate professional responsibilities, Mr. Fairbanks is a fellow of the Pilgrim Society, and a Fellow of the American Institute for Conservation. The American Crafts Council bestowed upon him the title of honorary fellow, and in 1983, he received the Distinguished Service Award from Antiques Monthly. He was awarded the Ellen Banning Ayer Award for his contributions to the cultural life of Boston in 1999 and a Luminary Award from the Fuller Craft Museum in 2009.
