English language educator Dr. Joan Warthling Roberts led a wonderful career in academia that spanned more than 30 years.

English language educator Dr. Roberts led a wonderful career in academia that spanned more than 30 years. Hired as an instructor of English at her alma mater, the University of Cincinnati, in 1969, she subsequently held several other teaching appointments throughout her career. Hired by Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, New York, in 1974, Dr. Roberts was director of academic remediation. She also taught at Manhattanville College in Purchase, New York, and the SUNY College at Buffalo before retiring in 2000, as a full professor of English.

Dr. Roberts has contributed numerous articles and papers to professional journals and at several conferences throughout her tenure. She notably wrote "Before Sherlock Holmes There was Anna Katharine Green" in MS Magazine in April 1985. She also authored "All Pity for Miss Dickinson's Starved Life is Misdirected," a paper that she delivered at the Twentieth Century Club in November 1992. Dr. Roberts authored a book, "Sicily and Naples, or the Fatal Union," which was published in 1986. The book was a critical edition of a Jacobean revenge play, volume 15 of "The Renaissance Imagination" series. Further, she contributed two chapters in the 1995 book "Prolegomena to the New Woman Detective." She has a forthcoming book as well, "Why Did She Do It? A Literary/Critical Biography of Anna Katharine Green, The Mother of the Detective Novel."

An alumnus of Nazareth College, Dr. Roberts received a Bachelor of Arts in 1951. Thanks to the generosity of the Danforth Foundation, she was awarded a fellowship to enroll in the Graduate Program at the University of Cincinnati, where she completed both a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in 1969 and 1975, respectively. She holds a permanent certification in secondary English in the state of New York.

To stay abreast in her field, Dr. Roberts has maintained membership with the Modern Language Association and the College English Association. The recipient of a Danforth Foundation fellowship between 1967 and 1975, Dr. Roberts has since also become a celebrated Marquis listee. She has been featured in the 25th edition of Who's Who in the East and the 20th edition of Who's Who of American Women.
