Prior to this prestigious appointment, he was stationed at the Defense Nuclear Agency at the Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico, where he held the posts of Test Director and Deputy Commander, between 1979 and 1983. Outside of his primary endeavors, Mr. Oppedahl served on the board of directors for BASIS International Ltd., from 1991 to 2015.
A Navy veteran, Captain Oppedahl initially served as a commissioned ensign with the United States Navy in 1956. As he progressed, he advanced through several positions, including in an airborne early warning squadron, in two air anti-submarine squadrons, as assistant navigator of USS Coral Sea (CV-43), as a basic jet flight instructor, and as a test group director of an underground nuclear test named Husky Ace, between 1957 and 1974. Furthermore, Captain Oppedahl held the posts as the weapons officer of USS Oriskany (CV-34) and as a program manager for armament with the Naval Air Systems Command in Washington D.C., from 1977 to 1979.
An expert in the field, Mr. Oppedahl has written the books, "Energy Loss of High Energy Electrons in Beryllium," published in 1971 and "Understanding Contractor Motivation and Incentive Contracts," published in 1977. For his admirable military and aviation service, he was the recipient of the Defense Superior Service Medal from the Department of Defense and the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award from the United States Federal Aviation Administration. Additionally, Mr. Oppedahl was presented with the Alumni Distinguished Service Award from Waldorf University in 2006.
During his time in the United States Navy, Captain Oppedahl earned a Bachelor of Science in naval science in 1963 and a Master of Science in nuclear physics in 1971, both from the Navy Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. Soon thereafter, he obtained a Master of Science in systems management from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California, in 1978. To remain knowledgeable about developments in the field, Mr. Oppedahl maintains affiliation with the United States Naval Institute, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, the Association of Naval Aviation, the Navy League of the United States, and the Experimental Aircraft Association.
