Dr. Dorothy Worthy Thomas is an educator and an educational administrator with more than 50 years of service to her field.

Dr. Thomas is an educator and an educational administrator with more than 50 years of service to her field. Driven by a lifelong desire to teach, she attended Bennett College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English and French in 1963. She continued her education at Hampton University, from which she graduated with a Master of Arts in French in 1973. Moreover, she completed a Certificate of Advanced Study in educational administration from the College of William and Mary in 1982, after which she pursued further postgraduate coursework at Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1993. Dr. Thomas completed her education in 1997 with a doctorate in rhetoric and linguistics from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Thomas is a licensed teacher in the state of Virginia, and began her career teaching French and English at the high school and junior high school levels in Newport News from 1963 until 1988, upon which she became a staff development specialist for Newport News Public Schools, with which she served through 1991. She joined the faculty of Hampton University as an assistant professor of English in 1991. During her association with the aforementioned institution, Dr. Thomas was appointed as the chair for the amenities committee between 1994 and 1996, and as a secretary of faculty, a secretary of the committee on committees, and the chair of the hospitality committee at the School of Liberal Arts and Education from 1994 to 1996.

Dr. Thomas served as an executive assistant to Hampton University president William R. Harvey from 1997 to 1998. After which she found success as an assessment facilitator for the Department of English until 2001. She recalls this particular appointment as a distinct highlight in a career suffused with outstanding accomplishments. Following her departure from that role, Dr. Thomas continued her career as an adjunct professor of English at Thomas Nelson Community College from 2001 until her retirement in 2014.

Acknowledged as a leading light in her particular field, Dr. Thomas is the author of the "Program for Effective Teaching brochure," 1990, and "The Questioning Behavior of Males and Females in an Undergraduate Class," (Dissertation), 1997. She has made assessment and professional development a focus of her career. Dr. Thomas was a member of the National Council of Teachers of English re-accreditation Committee from 1999 until 2000, and has been named a fellow of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. Furthermore, she bears the distinction of being an epistoleus of the honorable society of Alpha Kappa Alpha, where she has been a member since 1988.
