Having achieved a career of over 40 years of experience, Ms. Derrick has held multiple positions in the field of grant writing and grant management. She is currently a grant manager, a grant writer, and a grant writing consultant for federal, industry and foundation proposals. At the University of Nebraska Omaha's College of Information Science & Technology, she manages a research portfolio of $12 million in awards from the National Science Foundation, national Institutes of Health, and other sponsors. She is a member of the editorial board for the Society of Research Administrators International and a founding member of SRA's Author Fellowship Program Committee.

From 1992 to 1999, Ms. Derrick served as administrator and communications specialist for an engineering research center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In that role, she taught technical writing, organized technology transfer activities, and produced technical articles and reports. In 1999, she transitioned to a communications role in the UNL College of Engineering. A former board member of The Loren Eiseley Society, Ms. Derrick wrote and managed grants awarded by the Peter Kiewit Foundation and the Nebraska Humanities Council.

Since the beginning of her career in 1975 as a program specialist for the City of Syracuse, Ms. Derrick has found success in administrative, program management, marketing and communications roles in government and in the private sector. She has worked for the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Wells Engineers, and other employers. She was previously a grant coordinator for the University of Nebraska Omaha and has held positions in planning, contract management and MIS for $7 million federal grant programs in Syracuse, New York and Des Moines, Iowa.

Ms. Derrick initially pursued her education at Drake University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1981. She continued to complete coursework at the University of Nebraska Omaha and received a Master of Arts in 2003. She has completed twelve hours of doctoral studies in English and education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

An award-winning writer and editor, and prolific contributor of feature articles and stories to professional journals and magazines, Ms. Derrick served as the editor of the College of Engineering's Contacts magazine from 1997 to 2002, during which time she received an Award of Excellence from the Public Relations Society of America. She was co-editor of a national bridge manual published by the Precast Concrete Institute in 1997, copy editor and contributor to Plains Song Review from 2004 to 2007, and a contributor to Fine Lines. Notably, she was the recipient of a Jim Raglin Media award from the American Cancer Society in 1995.
