Dr. Judith Bowen Erickson enjoyed a rewarding career in sociology and research for more than 50 years.

An accomplished listee, Dr. Erickson celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been recognized for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. Dr. Erickson enjoyed a rewarding career in sociology and research for more than 50 years. Prior to working independently, she served as the director of research services for the Indiana Youth Institute (IYI) in Indianapolis between 1989 and 2002. IYI is a non-profit organization that supports the youth services field through innovative trainings, critical data and capacity-building resources. For three decades, IYI's efforts have been directed to increasing the well-being of all children. Among her other roles, Dr. Erickson taught at the Center for Youth Development and Research at the University of Minnesota and in the department of sociology at Macalester College. Through the Intergovernmental Personnel Act that created fellowships to bring academics in the U.S. government's grant-making process, Dr. Erickson spent two years with the Science Education Division of the National Science Foundation.

As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Erickson is best known for her development of framework for understanding the historical and contemporary roles for nonformal educational organizations for youth. She notably authored the "Directory of American Youth Organizations" in 1983, with biennial editions published until 1996. Dr. Erickson has also contributed numerous articles to professional journals.

Dr. Erickson has dedicated her time and expertise to various organizations throughout her career. She was a member of the Carnegie Council on Adolescent Development taskforce in Washington between 1990 and 1992 as well as a consultant to the Girl Scouts of America of the U.S.A. and the Boy Scouts of America in Irving, Texas. Locally, she was a member of the board of directors for the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. in Saint Croix Valley, MN. To prepare for her career, she obtained an undergraduate degree at Wheaton College in 1955. Dr. Erickson concluded her studies at the University of Minnesota, where she acquired both a master's degree in 1968 and Doctor of Philosophy in 1975.

While living in Minneapolis, she served as a volunteer for the Minneapolis Area United Way. In Indianapolis, Dr. Erickson served on the board of Safe Sitter, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching youth life and safety skills for when they are home alone or babysitting. Her work on youth organization history was supported by a Lilly Endowment grant between the years of 1985 and 1989. A Marquis listee, Dr. Erickson has been featured in the first edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering and the 24th and 25th editions of Who's Who in the Midwest.
