A renowned pediatric neurosurgeon and educator, Dr. Luerssen retired in 2017 as the chief quality officer of surgery at Texas Children's Hospital and a professor of neurological surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. Prior to being designated with the former position, he excelled for several years as the chief of the neurosurgical service at the Texas Children's Hospital. He began his career as a faculty member at the University of California San Diego Medical Center in the early 1980s, where he was active with the CNS injury research group. Subsequently, Dr. Luerssen became the director of pediatric neurosurgery at the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University in 1988, a post in which he remained for eighteen years.

Accruing more than four decades of experience, Dr. Luerssen has trained a number of fellows in his field, many of which have pursued careers in academic medicine. During his tenure at Baylor College of Medicine and Indiana University, he served as the director of the pediatric neurosurgery service and as the program director of the fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery. Notably conducting dozens of lectures and close to 250 presentations at meetings both national and international, he has authored or co-authored over 150 articles in peer-reviewed publications. A reviewer for several professional journals, Dr. Luerssen has contributed research in the area of central nervous system injury diagnosis, treatment and outcome to more than 40 book chapters and monographs.

Dr. Luerssen initially pursued an education at Purdue University, receiving a bachelor's degree in 1973. He later acquired a Doctor of Medicine at Indiana University in 1976. Completing an internship and a residency at Indiana University Hospital as well as a fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Dr. Luerssen is board certified in neurological surgery and pediatric neurological surgery.

A member of over 20 professional societies, Dr. Luerssen held multiple administrative roles for several of these organizations, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. He is a past president of the American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgeons. Moreover, Dr. Luerssen was an elected fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. Luerssen has secured myriad grants, fellowships and awards throughout his career. In 2017, he was honored with a Distinguished Surgeon Award form Texas Children's Hospital. He also accepted several accolades from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, including a Franc D. Ingraham Award for Distinguished Service in 2016 and a Donald D. Matson Award in 2011. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Luerssen has been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
