Previously, Ms. Tomlinson had held the role of a therapist with Isenberg and Associates, a division of Dunham Counseling Center, Ltd. from 2008 to 2011, and a clinician at TriCity Family Services from 2008 until 2009. She began her career as an instructor of career planning at Northern Illinois University, where she advanced through the ranks to the positions of a counselor and the acting assistant director for the Women's Resource Center between 2003 and 2007. In her numerous additional endeavors, Ms. Tomlinson was a parent mentor for the Illinois Federation of Families in 2004, the secretary and treasurer for the board of directors of the Chicago Human Rhythm Project from 1998 until 2000, and a grant writer with the Piel Morena Contemporary Dance Company from 2011 to 2012.

Extensively sought after for her expertise in the field of counseling and therapy, Ms. Tomlinson has presented and spoken at numerous seminars and conferences. Notably, she has delivered presentations on "Information and Support" on behalf of the National Association of Personnel Administrators Conference. Ms. Tomlinson has also provided her expertise in such engagements as "Finding Your Inner Laughter," at the Illinois Mental Health Counselors Association Annual Conference in 2008, and "Beyond Chronic Disease Management, Advocacy for Employees with Complex Health-Life Issues," at the Northern Illinois Employee Assistance Professionals Association Annual Conference in 2012.

A nationally certified counselor, Ms. Tomlinson initially sought an education at the University of Illinois, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in sociology in 1973. She concluded her academic pursuits at Northern Illinois University in 2004, earning a Master of Science in Education with a specific focus on counseling. To remain aware of developments in the field, Ms. Tomlinson has since maintained her professional affiliation with the Illinois Counseling Association, the Illinois Mental Health Counselors Association, and the Illinois Association for Couples and Families Counseling.

In accounting for her success, Ms. Tomlinson credits a significant need for counseling in her local community, which she has sought to fulfill. She truly enjoys being a mentor for students undertaking the master's program at Northwestern University. As she trains the incoming generation of therapists, Ms. Tomlinson aspires to eventually scale back her current level of involvement, and take on a more managerial role instead at her practice.
