A professor emeritus of history and the dean of the college at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, Dr. Akin worked as a faculty member on campus for nearly 25 years before retiring in 2002. With more than 35 years in academia to his credit, he previously excelled as the assistant dean of the arts and the dean of humanities at Concordia University, an associate professor of history at Loyola College and as a history instructor for the State University of New York. While at Concordia, Dr. Akin was notably the very first person to serve as the dean of humanities.
Active in his community, Dr. Akin has been involved on the board of the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office. He further contributed the board of the Pennsylvania Folklife Society, which is affiliated with Ursinus College, and the editorial board of the aforementioned society's Pennsylvania Folklife Magazine. Dr. Akin remains active as a board member for the Small College Creativity since 1989.

An accomplished writer, Dr. Akin authored "Technocracy and the American Dream" in 1977. He later penned "Faculty Development in Liberal Arts Colleges" in 1985. Furthermore, Dr. Akin completed service in the U.S. Army between 1956 and 1959.

Prior to embarking upon his professional path, Dr. Akin received a bachelor's degree from University of Maryland in 1961. He subsequently graduated from the University of Maryland with a master's degree in 1963. Obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Rochester in 1970, Dr. Akin concluded his academic efforts with a Doctor of Laws at Tohoku Gakuin University in 1991.

A member of several industry-related organizations, Dr. Akin is affiliated with the American Association of University Professors, the American Association of Academy Administrators and the American Historical Association. He is also a member of the Society for American Baseball Research, a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering the research and dissemination of the history and record of baseball. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Akin has been showcased in the fourth edition of Who's Who in American Education and the 24th edition of Who's Who in the East.
