Donald B. Olson, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Olson is a marine scientist and celebrated professor in the department of ocean sciences at the University of Miami's (UM) Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. Celebrating 40 years on campus this year, he is an expert in mesoscale oceanography and fronts, as well as marine ecosystem ecology. Prior to teaching, Dr. Olson was a third engineer for Houston Barge Lines between 1971 and 1974.

Currently teaching in the undergraduate marine science program and several reading classes per semester on topics such as fisheries, cephalopods and mathematical physiology. He remains a senior member of the ecosystem science and policy steering committee and an advisor for the UM Amateur Ornithology Club. He is actively involved in the protection of the UM Arboretum. Dr. Olson has been the chairman and co-chairman for doctorate level students and for numerous senior undergraduate theses.

For the past two decades, Dr. Olson has been instrumental in increasing the number of students in South American oceanographic programs. He has served on the visiting faculty at the University of Buenos Aires and the University of Sao Paulo and was responsible for pioneering a graduate course for students across Latin America on physical oceanography for fisheries and climate studies. Additionally, Dr. Olson led a summer program on biophysical interactions with a professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology as part of a U.S. Navy funded program to improve biophysical models of the ocean.

Dr. Olson's research has led him to sail across the Indian Ocean four times. He spent approximately a year at sea with various programs for the biophysical studies of the Gulf Stream front and long-line measurements of tracers across the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans. His work has also included simulations of western boundary currents and their eddy fields and ecosystem models of plankton and migratory fish. Dr. Olson has received numerous grants for his work from the office of Naval Research, the National Science Foundation, NASA and other organizations and has published more than 150 articles in scholarly journals and chapters to books as a result of his research. He is also a former associate editor of Oceanography magazine and the Journal of Marine Research, as well as a former editor of Geophysical Research Letters-Oceans.

Dr. Olson received a Bachelor of Science at the University of Wyoming in 1974. Accepted to Texas A&M University, he soon after acquired both a Master of Science as well as a Doctor of Philosophy in 1976 and 1979, respectively. To remain aware of developments in his field, he has been a member of the American Meteorological Society, the American Geophysical Union, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Oceanographic Society and the American Fisheries Society.

The recipient of a Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Wyoming, Dr. Olson also received an award from the UM graduate school for his work on drafting the university bylaws. Moreover, he bears the distinction of being a member of the honorable society of Sigma Xi. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Olson has been featured in the 55th and 56th editions of Who's Who in America.
