SEATTLE, WA, October 14, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Daniel Lloyd Flugstad, MD with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Flugstad celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Flugstad's passion for the sciences drew him towards a career in Medicine. His interest in working closely with people in a specialty of medicine that can substantially change lives, inspired him to specialize in orthopedic surgery. His brother, an anesthesiologist, supported his interest in medicine from an early age.

Dr. Flugstad subspecialized in total joint surgery and musculoskeletal oncology. He began his career during a time when patients with bone and soft tissue malignancies were previously treated with amputations and commonly succumbed to their tumor. He brought a new approach to the Pacific Northwest in the 1980's where these patients now survived, kept their limbs through the very complex surgeries he performed and had lifetime great function. Over the years, Dr Flugstad was pleased to witness long term survival and function of these patients, many of whom were adolescents at the time of treatment. He would receive many letters, graduation and wedding announcements, pictures decades later of their children and how well they lived their lives as a result of the treatment. He published a paper in the Annals of Surgery documenting the improved survival associated with excellent tumor surgical technique combined with appropriate adjuvant treatment.

An obvious additional subspecialty of Dr Flugstad was total joint replacement and complex total joint revision using the tools and implants that only he was familiar with due to his musculoskeletal oncology skills.

Dr. Flugstad earned a Doctor of Medicine, with honors, and a Bachelor of Science, with Honors, summa cum laude, in chemistry, both at the University of Washington. He did his residency (specialty training) in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Washington from 1980-1985. He did his fellowship in Musculoskeletal Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital / Boston Children's Hospital / Harvard Medical School 1986-1987, bringing the modern care of musculoskeletal tumors to the Pacific Northwest in 1987. The paucity of such subspecialists at that time in this field necessitated caring for patients from the surrounding 6 states until his retirement in 2019. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic surgery. He is a career long member of the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons and a multiple decade member of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.

Dr. Flugstad has been a Clinical Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery with the University of Washington in Seattle since 1985, instructing and training many residents and medical students over the years. Dr. Flugstad served as the Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Swedish Medical Center 2001-2005, being very instrumental in the formation of the Swedish Orthopedic Institute, a regionally renowned center of excellence in Orthopedic Surgery. He served on many boards and committees at Swedish Medical Center, The Polyclinic in Seattle and also in his church. As a result, morning and evening meetings on top of a very busy surgical practice, kept him very busy throughout his career as a physician and leader.

Dr. Flugstad has been listed as a Top Doctor in Seattle Magazine and in Seattle Metropolitan Magazine, yearly, from 2001 to 2018. Dr Flugstad is very grateful to his wife of 43 years, Cheryl, who has supported him throughout his career. They have 3 sons and 8 grandchildren that keep he and his wife very busy in his retirement with many family activities. He enjoys other activities such as travel, golf, boating and photography.
