Dr. Stephen White is a biophysicist and an educator with more than 55 years of distinguished contributions to his discipline.

Dr. White is a biophysicist and an educator with more than 55 years of distinguished contributions to his discipline. He attended the University of Colorado, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in physics in 1963. He continued his education at the University of Washington, completing a Master of Science in physics in 1965, and a Doctor of Philosophy in physiology and biophysics in 1969. Dr. White served to the rank of a captain in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1969 to 1971. In 2008, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Philosophy at Stockholm University.

Between 1971 and 1972, Dr. White was a United States Public Health Services postdoctoral fellow in biochemistry at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville. He began his career as an assistant professor of physiology and biophysics at the University of California Irvine in 1972, after which he rose to become an associate professor in 1975, and the vice chairman of physiology and biophysics in 1974. Dr. White held the position of the chairman of physiology and biophysics at UC Irvine from 1977 until 1989. He has been a professor for the University of California since 1978.

Dr. White was a guest biophysicist at the Brookhaven National Laboratory on Long Island from 1977 to 1999, and a member of the National Institutes of Health BBM Study Section between 2005 and 2010. He is the recipient of numerous accolades for his research, including a United States Public Health Service career development grant awarded from 1975 until 1980, and the Avanti Award in Lipids in 2009. Moreover, Dr. White was named a fellow of the Biophysical Society in 2002, and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2018.
