Thomas Wesley Allen, DO, MPH, has been Inducted into the Prestigious Marquis Who's Who Biographical Registry

Dr. Thomas Wesley Allen currently serves as a clinical professor and a volunteer faculty member at the Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences.

    TULSA, OK, October 16, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Thomas Wesley Allen, DO, MPH, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Having accrued over 50 years of inimitable experience in the field of medicine, in 1991 Dr. Allen became the Vice President for Health Affairs at Oklahoma State University and Dean of its College of Osteopathic Medicine in Tulsa. While serving as its CEO, he instituted the Masters and PhD programs in Forensic Sciences and established the OSU Center for Hyperbaric and Undersea Medicine. Upon his retirement from full-time academic service at OSU in 2003, he was appointed Vice President and Professor of Medicine Emeritus. He currently serves as a clinical professor and a volunteer faculty member at the Oklahoma State University Center for Health Sciences. Additionally, he held an academic and research position from 2005 to 2019 at the University of Oklahoma School of Community Medicine as a Clinical Professor of Family Medicine and Director of the Human Performance Laboratory.

He previously held a number of roles in medical academia from 1970 onward, including, but not limited to, working as an instructor of medicine for Northwestern University Medical School between 1970 and 1973 He was appointed assistant professor of medicine beginning in 1970 advancing through the academic ranks to professor of medicine. Dr. Allen became the vice president of academic affairs and dean for Midwestern University and the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine serving in that role from 1981 to 1987.

In 1987, he was named the Associate Dean for Academic and Clinical Affairs, Professor of Clinical Medicine and Director of Sports Medicine for the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine, which is now known as the Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine, where he served until 1991. Many of Dr. Allen's subsequent positions, primarily in an educational capacity relating to pulmonary, internal, and sports medicine, have been at Oklahoma State University and the University of Oklahoma.

Prior to embarking on his long professional journey, Dr. Allen enrolled at Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in biology in 1960. He subsequently studied at the Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in Downers Grove, Illinois, where he earned a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine in 1964. Following a residency in Internal Medicine Dr. Allen served as a research fellow in pulmonary medicine at Northwestern University. Dr. Allen concluded his personal academic efforts with a Master of Public Health from the University of Oklahoma in 2010

In light of his extensive experience and contributions to his field, he received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine.

In the midst of his medical career, Dr. Allen served his country as a consultant to the U.S. Army's 85th Medical Battalion on the subject of hyperthermia and hypothermia in 1987. He was commissioned in the U.S. Army Reserve as a Major with the Medical Corps in1988 and recommissioned as a Colonel in 1990. From 1991 through 2005 he was the 95th Division Surgeon. Dr. Allen earned an honorable discharge in 2005.

A civically-minded citizen, Dr. Allen has contributed his time and resources to a number of worthy causes in collaboration with the federal government. He provided his expertise to the National Advisory Council on Health Professions Education in Washington, D.C. from 1986 to 1990, during which time he also participated as a member on the Bureau of Health Professions and the Bureau of Maternal Child Health and Resource Development Coordinating Committee on AIDS in 1987. Furthermore, he was a member of the National Advisory Council for the National Health Service Corps from 1994 to 1997. Dr. Allen has likewise held positions in local government pertinent to his expertise, having been active as a member of the Oklahoma Committee on Violence and Public Health in 1994, and a member on the Oklahoma Genetics Advisory Council from 2000 until 2002.

A board certified diplomate through the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, and Sports Medicine Dr. Allen has written prolifically in his field, co-authoring textbooks and book chapters on a variety of subjects. Specifically, he assisted in writing the book chapter "Disaster Medicine, Current Diagnosis and Treatment Emergency Medicine" in 2011, penned a book review on "Flexibility: A Concise Guide to Conditioning, Performance Enhancement, Injury Prevention, and Rehabilitation" in 2009, and authored a book chapter called "Sports Medicine" for "Foundations of Osteopathic Medicine" in 1997. Furthermore, Dr. Allen found success as the editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association from 1987 to 1998.

For his numerous contributions in the field, as well as his service to the U.S. Army Reserve, Dr. Allen has been the recipient of several accolades and awards. Among his numerous military awards, he received the Legion of Merit in 2005 and a Meritorious Service Medal twice from the U.S. Army in 2004 and 1995. He accepted an Outstanding Service Award from the Rural Health Association of Oklahoma in 2002, a Phillips Medal of Public Service by Ohio University in 2001, and a Dale Dodson D.O. Award from the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine in 1997. Likewise, Dr. Allen garnered a citation from the Oklahoma House of Representatives as the Doctor of the Day in 1996, and official recognition as Faculty Member of the Year by the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1972, among many other commendations.

Active in his local community, he has been an elected official, serving as a trustee for the village of Western Springs, Illinois from 1981 to 1985. Dr. Allen has acquired a lauded reputation as the health unit chairman of the Tulsa chapter of United Way in 2000, before which he excelled as a civic unit chair in 1995. In order to remain aware of developments in his field of study, Dr. Allen retains his professional affiliation with numerous organizations, including the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine, the American Thoracic Society, the Institute of Medicine of Chicago, and the American Heart Association, to name several. He additionally bears the distinction of being a member of the honorable society of Phi Kappa Phi.

He holds honorary fellowships in the American College of Physicians, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine and the American Osteopathic College of Internists.

As he approaches retirement from his current roles in academia, Dr. Allen has, by no means, slowed down in his activities, nor rested on his laurels. Not only is he an avid runner, he is also a classically trained vocalist, a choral conductor, and a stage and screen actor, having appeared in numerous commercials, stage plays, and films.
