Dr. Donald Brod Celebrated for Dedication to the Field of Journalism

Dr. Brod excelled for many years as a professor and a chairman at Northern Illinois University



Dr. Donald Brod is especially proud of having a journalism scholarship named in his honor at Northern Illinois University.

    SAINT CHARLES, IL, October 22, 2019 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Donald Brod has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

After serving as a corporal in the U.S. Army between 1955 and 1957, Dr. Brod began his career as a reporter and an editor for Montezuma Valley Journal in Cortez, CO. In 1960, he accepted a position at the University of Wisconsin as a member of the journalism faculty, which he held for the remainder of the decade before obtaining the same role with Northern Illinois University. Subsequently, Dr. Brod flourished as the chairman of the journalism department from 1976 to 1981 and from 1987 to 1992.

Over the years, Dr. Brod gained valuable experience teaching journalism in Great Britain, China and Germany, where he led groups of community journalists. Additionally, he had the honor of serving as an executive secretary for the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors during the early 1980s. In a career filled with highlights, Dr. Brod is especially proud of having a journalism scholarship named in his honor at Northern Illinois University and a service award named in his honor by the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors.

An expert in his field, Dr. Brod earned a Bachelor of Arts from Southeast Missouri State College in 1954. Following this accomplishment, he graduated with a Master of Arts from the University of Missouri and a Doctor of Philosopy from the University of Minnesota. Throughout his career, he retained his professional alignment with the Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication and the Society of Professional Journalists. With a plethora of knowledge at his disposal, Dr. Brod authored and edited "Lighting the Chalice: Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva at 175" and "The Scopes Trial: A Look at Press Coverage after Forty Years," which was featured in Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly.

Due to his outstanding efforts in journalism, Dr. Brod was presented with the 1st Place Photojournalism Award from the Colorado Press Association in 1960 and the Excellence in Teaching Award from Northern Illinois University in 1987. An acclaimed industry professional, he was also honored with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award and profiles in three volumes of Who's Who in the Midwest. Looking toward the future, Dr. Brod intends to enjoy his retirement.
