The ADEA honored Dr. Leo E. Rouse with a Presidential Citation for distinguished service and dedication to the advancement of the dental education community.

An accomplished professor and dean emeritus at Howard University in the college of dentistry, Dr. Rouse officially retired in 2015 after 18 years as a faculty member. He previously served as an associate dean for clinical affairs and chairman of the department of clinical dentistry. An alumnus of the university, some of Dr. Rouse's many career highlights during his tenure included serving as a mentor and witnessing multiple students achieve success in dentistry upon graduation. Prior to entering academia, he spent 24 years in the U.S. Army, reaching the rank of a colonel as commander and chief operating officer of the U.S. Army Dental Command, commanding the Army Dental Corps worldwide.
A prominent figure in his field, during his career Dr. Rouse provided his expertise as an examiner, consultant and member of the examination development committee for the Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examiners (now the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments). The commission is notably one of five examination agencies for dentists in the U.S. In 2016, he became a senior scholar-in-residence and consultant with the American Dental Education Association (ADEA). Affiliated with the organization for several years, Dr. Rouse most notably served as the very first African American president of the association, chairing the council of deans and flourishing as one of the four ADEA commissioners on the Commission of Dental Accreditation. Considered the voice of dental education, the mission of the association is to lead institutions and individuals in the dental education community to address contemporary issues influencing education, research and the delivery of oral health care for the overall health and safety of the public.
Dr. Rouse received a bachelor's degree and a Doctor of Dental Surgery at Howard University. He later received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters at Western University of Health Sciences in 2014. To remain aware of developments in his field, Dr. Rouse is a fellow of the American College of Dentists and a member of the American Dental Association, the American Association Dental Examiners and the National Dental Association. The ADEA honored him in 2009 with a Presidential Citation for distinguished service and dedication to the advancement of the dental education community.
The recipient of a 2011 Legend Award from the National Dental Association, Dr. Rouse also received several other honors throughout his career. To wit, he has been bestowed with such accolades as a 2017 Howard University College of Dentistry Distinguished Alumni Award and a Student Clinician Achievement Award from the American Dental Association. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Rouse has been featured in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who in the East.
