With more than 55 years of professional experience, Dr. De Jonghe has flourished as a staff senior scientist with the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory Materials Science Division since 1978, also serving as the program leader of advanced ceramics from 1985 to 2001. In addition to his role, he has been a professor of ceramic engineering at the University of California Berkeley since 1988, having garnered a laudable reputation as a professor-in-residence since 1985, and an associate professor since 1978. Prior to obtaining these positions, he excelled as an associate professor at Cornell University in 1978, where he was previously an assistant professor between 1972 and 1978. Earlier in his career, he was active as a research fellow at Harvard University's Division of Engineering and Applied Physics from 1970 until 1972 and a research associate at the Nuclear Research Center Solid State Physics Department from 1963 to 1965 in Mol, Belgium.
Dr. De Jonghe first pursued an education with the Higher Technical Institute of Antwerp, Belgium, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering in 1961. He then joined the military, serving admirably until 1963. He returned to his education with the University of Delaware, completing a Master of Science in applied sciences and metallurgy in 1968. Dr. De Jonghe subsequently joined the University of California Berkeley, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in materials science 1970.
Throughout his career, Dr. De Jonghe has been honored plentifully for his contributions. A senior U.S. scientist of the AV Humboldt Foundation, he has been recognized as a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society, who also gave him the U.S.-Japan R.M. Fulrath Award. For his distinguished achievements and for notable service to the University he received the Berkeley Citation from the University of California. Professor De Jonghe has been featured in numerous honors publications, including multiple editions of Who's Who in America.
