Dr. Rickels is a retired psychiatrist and educator with more than 65 years of excellence in the pharmacology and treatment of anxiety disorders. A precocious student, he swiftly decided upon a career in medicine, and earned a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Muenster in 1951. Dr. Rickels completed an internship at Dortmund City Hospital from 1951 until 1952, and further postgraduate coursework at the University of Frankfurt and City Hospital Kassel between 1952 and 1954.

In 1954, Dr. Rickels relocated to the United States, and completed psychiatric residencies at the Mental Health Institute of Cherokee, Iowa, and the University of Pennsylvania Hospital through 1957. Heartened by the results he observed with novel medical interventions for what was previously intractable schizophrenia, he became interested in a career in psychiatry. He became an instructor at the University of Pennsylvania in 1957, rising to the position of professor by 1969. Dr. Rickels further served as a professor of pharmacology at the University of Pennsylvania from 1976 to 1998, the chairman of the committee on studies involving human beings between 1985 and 1998, and the chief of the mood and anxiety disorders program from 1964 until 2010.

Dr. Rickels continued to teach at the University of Pennsylvania until 2014, and was named Stuart and Emily B.H. Mudd Professor of Human Behavior from 1977 to 2014. He was granted emeritus status in 2018. He has contributed to more than 600 articles in professional journals, and is the author of 10 books. His work focused on the outcomes of increased interventions by family doctors, and his research was instrumental in pioneering a more holistic model of mental health treatment. A lifetime fellow of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, Dr. Rickels is additionally a lifetime member of the American Psychiatric Association, and a corresponding member of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology.
