Mr. Carey became interested in chemistry after recognizing his talents in math and science in high school. Driven to find a career where he could apply his mathematical ability to solve real-world problems, he found chemistry to be a natural fit. He attended the University of North Texas, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry in 1970 and a Master of Science in chemistry in 1972. Mr. Carey completed postgraduate coursework at Kennedy Western University.

From 1968 until 1972, Mr. Carey served as a teaching and research assistant at the University of North Texas, Denton. He briefly taught chemistry at Richardson High School before joining the staff of Dow Chemical Company in 1973. Beginning as a research chemist, Mr. Carey rose to the role of a laboratory supervisor in 1977 and, further, to a project leader from 1984 until 1989. Mr. Carey flourished as a regional sales manager for Viscotek Corporation between 1989 and 1990 and a laboratory manager with the Hitox Corporation from 1990 to 1992.

Between 1992 and 1995, Mr. Carey flourished as a materials manager for Amana, now Raytheon, in Amana, Iowa. He continued his career from 1995 to 1998 as a technology manager of Goldschmidt Chemical Corporation in Hopewell, Virginia, and returned to the classroom full-time in 1999 at the ITT Technical Institute. Mr. Carey remained active as part of the faculty at Wharton County Junior College from 2001 until his retirement in 2016, serving as the chair of the division of math and sciences from 2008 to 2011 and the department head of physics, chemistry and engineering between 2007 and 2012.

Much sought for his scholarly opinion, Mr. Carey has been an invited speaker at industry conferences, including the Polyurethane Foamers Association and the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) Insulation Technology Advisory Committee (ITAC) semiannual conferences from 1992 to 1997. He has further contributed articles to various professional publications, including the Journal of Inorganic Chemistry, and the Dow Tech Service and Development Workshop. He likewise holds a patent for a process to produce picloram with reduced tetrachloro-2-pyridyl guanidine impurities. Mr. Carey is a member of the American Chemical Society and Alpha Chi Sigma, for which he has held a variety of leadership roles.
